5 Ways to Use Digg and StumbleUpon to Generate Traffic
Social networking sites like Digg and StumbleUpon can be great generators of free traffic. It does require a little work, like all things worth doing but the benefits can easily outweigh the efforts you put forth. I’ve compiled ten do’s and don’ts for the sites.
- Try to avoid being perceived as a spammer, even if you tactics are indeed spamarific. Have others submit your content first, don’t vote for or review your content from your account, etc. It’s tempting I know, but refrain… really. The last thing you want is for all your hard work to be discounted by you trying to get it out there too aggressively.
- No brainer here: Submit good content… nuff said.
- Linkbait your titles, descriptions and keywords dont just copy and paste or summarize the content. There have been a few stories lately about men marrying dogs (literally) for one reason or another (a curse comes to mind)… so I said what the hey and went with – Man marries real bitch to …..? Easy and common tactic but easy to overlook when you’re thinking “Social Bookmarking” rather than “Linkbait”.
- Network with others trying to do the same in an effort to cross-promote. Say you have a great e-book product, if you find other marketers that may have say a great affiliate program for example. Work together submitting articles for one another and promoting each others products. There are organizations out there like this, including traffic swapping, banner swapping, etc.
- Include Digg and Stumble widgets on your content so it can easily be submitted by others.

I agree more people need to be aware of the traffic that these sites can generate. There are great plugins you can use with any WordPress installation that will allow you to easily integrate easy bookmarking with almost any social networking site around. I have had great success getting traffic from Technorati and especially Twitter. My newest blog is built around being able to easily share content because i have found this to be so effective. Good job getting the word out!
Many thanks for sharing such an informative article with all of us. I’ve bookmarked your blog will come back for a re-read again. Keep up the great work.
